Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.

This year the train is operated by GB Railfreight and is hauled by class 66 locos.
66746 has been specially painted in Royal Scotsman maroon livery.

The train normally sticks to 3 itineraries:

"Classic" 5 Day/4 Night Tour
Day 1: 1H79 1344 Edinburgh - Keith via Aberdeen
Day 2: 1H80 0833 Keith - Kyle
Day 3: 1H81 0825 Kyle - Carrbridge (ECS to Boat of Garten)
Day 4: (ECS from Boat of Garten), 1H82 Kingussie - Dundee
Day 5: 1H84 0807 Dundee - Edinburgh

The Classic trip would normally require one loco but the Kyle line does not have Next
Generation RETB (yet) so at present, a loco with older RETB kit goes with the train to operate down the Kyle line. It is expected that from 20/06 NG-RETB fitted 66746 will be able to operate the Classic itinerary on it's own.

"Western" 4 Day/3 Night Tour
Day 1: 1H85 1331 Edinburgh - Spean Bridge
Day 2: 1H86 Spean Bridge - Fort William - Mallaig - Fort William - Bridge of Orchy
Day 3: 1H87 Bridge of Orchy - Gourock - Kilmarnock (once Wemyss Bay platform 1 re-opens the train will run there)
Day 4: 1H88 0545 Kilmarnock (or Wemyss Bay) - Edinburgh
The Western Trip operates in top and tail mode due to the length of the train on the Mallaig extension. On arrival back at Fort William, one loco stables and runs light to Gourock on Day 3 to re-attach to the train. This means the veranda coach is open for the journey over Rannoch Moor.

"Highland" 3 Day/2 Night Tour
Day 1: 1H89 1344 Edinburgh - Boat of Garten
Day 2: 5H90 1104 Boat of Garten - Aviemore, 1H90 1208 Aviemore - Inverness - Dundee
Day 3: 1H91 0807 Dundee - Edinburgh
The Highland trip operates with one locomotive.

A few times per year the train goes off the beaten track and heads into England, there is one "Grand Tour" and two "Majestic England" trips planned for 2016.
Bespoke charters may also be run.
