Photo Title:
V1/V3 with train at Bothwell
Description:
A V1/V3 tank is pictured about to turn back just beyond Bothwell station on 2nd July 1955, three days after the station had closed to passenger traffic. The train is standing on the section between the station and Craighead viaduct, which trains once used to cross into Burnbank and Hamilton, but this section had closed on 15th September 1952, leaving Bothwell as the terminus for trains from Shettleston. The line would stagger on for freight traffic for another few years before succumbing in the 1960s. At least one final passenger train called at Bothwell in the 1960s - a rail tour hauled by ex-NBR 256 'Glen Douglas'. The bridge seen in this picture survives today,as does that over Bothwell station itself. Sadly, these are only a handful of reminders of the line's existance, as since closure, it has been all but obliterated with no chance of re-opening.
