Prep work for new chord at Anniesland
Description:
With the unusual sight of a Colas class 60 being the 1st loco to be used during the preparation works! In 2016 Glasgow QS will be closed for many weeks as part of the EGIP project. This will allow for platforms to be lengthened and the rails in the tunnel to be lowered for electrification purposes. Therefore, NR have come up with the rather neat idea to build a 375m chord at Anniesland station to allow trains on the E&G to effectively go round in a circle (both clockwise and anti clockwise) under the streets of Glasgow! Starting at Cowlairs West junction (Eastfield depot) and taking a right towards Maryhill and onwards onto this new chord at Anniesland (at the moment the lines do not connect at Anniesland and the line that the Colas 60 sits on goes into the bay platform that I am stood on whilst taking the photo) and then into Glasgow QS low level and back out the other side to Springburn and then rejoining the E&G at Cowlairs East jnct (some trains will do it in revers). Looking at the photograph, what you see is the embankment works behind the class 60 which will allow for two tracks (one from the new single lead jnct and one from the bay platform). Where the unit is passing is where there will be a crossover and where the 60 is roughly where the points will create the new chord. The bay platform will remain and therefore where the embankment is, you will end up with a double track, but one will be from the bay platform and the other from the North Electric line into Glasgow Queen Street low level that you see the unit on. The Colas class 60 is 60085 and Colas 60087 was on the other end. The working was 6K25 Millerhill – Maryhill Jnct and unfortunately the class 60 never got any nearer than this, before heading back. The unit is 320321 and is just arriving at Anniesland station with 2C60 12:41 Milngavie to Motherwell.
