Photo Title:
REAL signals
Description:
Nice old BR picture from the loft of the era of the pneumatic signals at Glasgow Central introduced when the station was extended at the beginning of the 1900s. These were controlled from the signalbox on the bridge over the Clyde pictured here. The system lasted until 1959-60 when resignalling took place and I was lucky enough to see it in operation in its final stages. The clatter and hiss of the signals and route/ platform indicators was a joy to behold. It lived on in a sense with pneumatically operated points until very recently. The skeleton of the old box remained into the late 60s I'm sure. The gantry in the background, the footbridge to the box has gone but the foreground one still exists today albeit with soul-less colour lights
