Caledonian Railway

Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.
The Caledonian Railway runs for four miles from Brechin, in Angus, east to Bridge of Dun near Montrose. The line passes through attractive countryside and features some taxing gradients of up to 1 in 67. Brechin station is the largest branch terminus (rather than a former through station) in preservation and is one of the most original. Bridge of Dun was a former junction station on the closed Strathmore main line between Perth and Kinnaber junction. The line to Brechin closed in 1982; there aren't (and never were) any intermediate stations.

The Railway runs Sunday steam services between May and September, supplemented with a diesel service on Saturdays in July and August. There are also Day Out With Thomas events, Murder Mystery evenings and Santa Specials in December.

The line does not have a connection to the national rail network. The nearest main line station is Montrose.
