Built by British Railways at Swindon for use on the Western Region, after withdrawal from service, many of these locos saw further use on industrial sites, before preservation.

D9524 was used by BP at Grangemouth in the 1970s. In 1973 it's original Paxman engine was replaced by a Dorman engine. It was acquired by the SRPS in 1981 and moved their Falkirk depot, then on to the Boness and Kinneil Railway in 1988. There it was fitted with a Rolls-Royce engine, painted in a fictitious BR blue livery and numbered 14901. It was sold in 2007 and moved south, initially to the Elsecar railway in South Yorkshire.
