Class 28

Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.
The 20 diesel locomotives built by Metropolitan-Vickers, best known for their unusual Co-Bo wheel arrangement, were regular visitors to Scotland in the first few years after introduction in 1958.

Although based on the London Midland Region, initially at Derby and Cricklewood, from March 1959 they worked the 'Condor' overnight container train from Hendon to Glasgow (Gushetfaulds), and then occasionally appeared on local trains to the Clyde coast.

  • A photo by M.R. Galley, published in the book 'Diesel Days Scotland', shows D5713 powering an excursion train south from Stirling to Glasgow on 8th August 1959.

  • These Metro-Vick Type-2 diesels were problematic and were replaced by BR-Sulzer Type-2s or BR-Sulzer Type-4s on the 'Condor' from 1961, bringing an end to their use in Scotland. Although later based at Carlisle Upperby it is not thought they made any cross-border visits.

  • The last of the class were withdrawn September 1968, soon after they had been designated as Class 28.
  • Eight of the locos, D5703/04/09/10/13/15/18, were scrapped by J. McWilliams of Shettleston in 1968/69.
  • One locomotive survives in preservation.
