The British Railways Standard Class 4 2-6-0 steam locomotives were built from 1952 to 1957 for mixed traffic use on secondary routes.
One hundred and fifteen of these engines were built, 76000-76114, and they were based on all regions except the Western.

- 35 members of the class were delivered new to Scottish Region Depots.
- Five were delieved to Motherwell in December 1952. More locos were delivered from the end of September 1956 to November 1957.

- Reallocations in the 1960s saw the class at other Scottish Region Sheds.
- Six locos moved north from the North Eastern Region in November 1963: 76021 & 76024 to Hurlford (67B), 76045 to Grangemouth (65F), 76046 to Dawsholm (65D), 76049 & 76050 to Hawick (64G).
- Other depots that had the class on their books were: Aberdeen Ferryhill (61B), Keith (61C), Dunfermline Upper (62C), Perth (63A), Oban (63C), Fort William (63B), St Margarets (64A), Dalry Road (64C), Bathgate (64F), Polmadie (66A), Greenock Ladyburn (66D), Carstairs (66E), Ayr (67C), Ardrossan (67D) and Beattock (68D/66F)
- Withdrawals from service on the Scottish Region started with 76097 (the 2nd of the class to be withdrawn) condemned at Ayr in July 1964.
- Locos moving south to the London Midland Region in 1965 were 76095/099/106.
- Five locos (76000/46/94/98/104) remained until the end of Scottish Region steam, condemned on 1st May 1967.
- South of the border the last of class was withdrawn in December 1967.
- Four of the Class survive in preservation, with 76079 operating on the mainline.
- On 6th October 2001, Past Time Rail 'The 30th Anniversary Limited' railtour was hauled by Black Five 45407 in the guise of 45157, from Preston to Carstairs but with 76079 attached on the rear as banker from Oxenholme to Penrith and from Beattock to Carstairs.

- At Carstairs both locos turned on the triangle and the train proceeded to Edinburgh double headed. (Day 1 timings)

- Day 2 on Sunday 7th, saw the double headed train make a circuit of the Edinburgh Suburban Line, before heading south steam hauled to Preston. (Day 2 timings)
- Ahead of the 2004 Jacobite season, loco 76079 was sent to Fort William to work a private charter train for German tourists.
- On Tuesday 18th May, 76079 with diesel 37197 and 8 coaches ran ECS as 5Z22 Carnforth to Fort William. <Flickr - at Carlisle>
- For the charter, 76079 changed identity to become former Fort William loco 76001, with cabside number overlays and replacement front end number plate.
- The private charter ran on Saturday 23rd May as a 4-coach 1Z23 Fort William to Mallaig, returing as Empty Coaching stock in the afternoon. <Flickr - Passing Fort William Jct Yard>
- On Sunday 24th, The the 4MT hauled a 6-coach train Fort William to Mallaig and return, open to the public as a one-off. <Flickr - Passing Fort William Jct Yard>
- 76079 still had the 76001 number-plate on Monday 24th May 2004 when it came south with 37197 and the ECS as 5Z23 Fort William to Carnforth. <SmugMug - Photos>
- For the last month of the 2008 Jacobite season, 76079 was sent to Fort William to cover an absent Black 5 and then a faulty K1.
- On 5th September It came north as from the East Lancashire Railway with its support coach, with 76069 on the front end number-plate, but 76001 on the cabsides. (5Z80 Timings) <YouTube - at Garelochhead>.
- Monday 8th September saw the 4MT begin a 2-week stint on the Jacobite service to Mallaig, by which time the smoke box number-plate had been changed to 76001.
- After the last day of the Jacobite season, a two-day photo charter used the 4MT (and the Black Five 45407 running as 45487) on a 5-coach train.

- Sunday 12th, the 4MT ran to Arisaig in the morning, returning to Fort William chimney 1st <Flick - by Loch Eilt>
- In the afternoon, after turning, the 4MT ran to Mallaig chimney 1st <Flickr - near Lochailort>
- On Monday 13th October 2008 a 5Z25 10-coach Empty stock train ran from Fort Willam to Carnforth, headed by the 4MT (still as 76001) and Black Five 45407. (Photo - south of Crianlarich), <Flickr - South of Carstairs>
