The British Railways Standard Class 4 tank steam locomotives were built from 1951 to 1956 primarily for use on suburban passenger services.
One hundred and fifty-five of these engines were built, 80000-80154, and they served on all regions of BR. The last of the class was withdrawn in 1967.

- Forty-six of the class were delivered new to the Scottish Region:
- 80000-09, 80020-30, 80054-58, 80106-115, 80121-130.
- The first of these was 80020, new to Aberdeen Kittybrewster (61A) in October 1951.
- Most (if not all) of the locos new to the Scottish Region had a square recesses on the driver's cabside to allow fitting of token exchange apparatus (80106-110 may be the exceptions).
- By 1956 Polmadie (66A) had 21 of the locos, Corkerhill (67A) had 8, and Kittybrewster (61A) had 11.
- The others based at Keith (61C), Dundee (62B), Perth (63A) & Stirling (63B).
- In May 1957, locos 80106-110 (61A) were exchanged for 80111-115 (66A).
- Eighteen locos transferred from LMR to ScR in first half of 1960:
- 80044-53, 80060-63, 80086, 80091-93. (The first ten to 67A)
- With dieselisation of the Great North of Scotland section, locos from Keith (61C) and Aberdeen Kittybrewster (61A) moved south in 1961.
- Eleven locos transferred in from Leeds area to ScR in November 1963:
- 80071, 80073-077, 80116-120.
- During the 1960s small numbers of the class were allocated to the following sheds:
- Greenock Ladyburn (66D), Hurlford (67B), Ayr (67C), Ardrossan (67D), Dumfries (67E), Stranraer (67F/68C), Beattock (66F), Eastfield (65A), St Rollox (65B), Stirling (63B/65J), Perth South (63A), Dundee (62B), Dalry Road (64C), Hawick (64G).
- In January 1964, the Seventy-six of the class were based on Scottish region.
- 21 at Corkerhill (67A), 9 at Polmadie (66A), 9 at St Margarets (64A), 8 at Carstairs (66E).
- Withdrawals of ScR locos start with 80030 & 80049 of Corkerhill in Condemned in June 1964.
- Six of the class lasted to the end of Scottish Region steam working on 1st May 1967.
- 80004, 80046 (67A), 80045, 80086, 80116, 80120 (66A).
- Loco 80002 was retained at Cowlairs for pre-heating carriages.
