Class 120

Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.

Class 120 DMUs, known as Cross-Country units, built at Swindon in 1960.

Seven 3-car sets were built for the Scottish Region. They were notable in having a small buffet area in the centre car.
These units primarily worked the Inverness - Aberdeen route from 1960 to 1980.
They were also used on a summer Glasgow Queen Street to Oban service until 1970.

In 1986, a crisis with DMU availability on the Scottish region after all Class 107 units were taken out of service, saw many Class 120s sent from the London Midland Region to Ayr Depot to work Ayrshire services out of Glasgow Central prior to electrification and introduction of Class 318 EMUs.

Eight driving vehicles were retained at Haymarket depot in the late 1980s working local services out of Edinburgh, Glasgow Queen Street and later Glasgow Central. These were the last of the class in service, operating with class 101 centre cars, and they were finally withdrawn in October 1989.

The last vehicles were scrapped by MC Metals at Springburn.
