LMS 2-6-4T

  • LMS Class 4P 2-6-4T locos appeared in Scotland in 3 different variants, designed by the succession of LMS chief mechanical engineers.
    • Henry Fowler (introduced from 1927), William Stanier (introduced 1935) and Charles Fairburn (introduced 1945).
  • LMS Shed Allocations, November 1945 (RCTS locomotive Stock books, Volume 2)
    • Fowler 2-6-4T: 2400/17 (27A Polmadie), 2415/16/18-23 (27B Greenock)
    • Stanier 2-6-4T: 2472-75 (30C Ardrossan), 2476/77/80/81/83-86/90-92 (27A Polmadie)
    • Fairburn 2-6-4T: 2688-97 (27A Polmadie).
  • By the time of nationalisation in 1948, the Stanier type had been sent away south.
  • The Fairburn type remained in production until 1951, when it was succeeded by the BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T
  • The ten Fowler 2-6-4T locos were transferred south in Spring 1954.

  • Four Stanier locos (42426, 42462, 42578, 42664) were transferred from the LMR to Parkhead (65C), in February 1961, to cover suspension of the North Electric service, returning south in November 1961.

  • Fairburn 2-6-4T 42168 was based at Aviemore (60B) from May 1957 to September 1961.

  • In 1962 there were 87 locos of the Fairburn type allocated to Scottish sheds, mostly in the west of Scotland.

  • The last of the Fairburn 2-6-4T locos in the Scottish fleet, loco 42274, was chosen to work the final Gourock to Glasgow Central steam hauled train on 28 April 1967.
