LMS Royal Scot Class 4-6-0

Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.
The London Midland & Scottish (LMS) 'Royal Scot' class were steam locomotives with a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, introduced in 1927 for working express passenger trains.

  • Fifty locomotives of this class were built for LMS by North British Locomotive Company in 1927, with 20 more later built in Derby.
    • 6100-6124 built at NBL Queens Park Works in 1927
    • 6125-6149 built at NBL Hyde Park Works in 1927
    • 6150-6169 built at LMS Derby Works in 1930.
  • NBL Hyde Park works also built experimental loco 6399 'FURY' for LMS in 1929. This was rebuilt in 1935 at Crewe works with a conventional tapered boiler and renumbered 6170.
  • The original NBL built 6100 'Royal Scot' swapped identities with Derby built 6152 in 1933.

  • Originally built with parallel boilers, the whole class was rebuilt with tapered boilers, new frames and cylinders between 1943 and 1955.

  • From September 1927, locos 6127-6132 were allocated Polmadie and worked the 'Royal Scot' and 'Night Scot' from Glasgow Central to Carlisle (where English based locos took over).
    • By 1933 these duties had been taken over by larger locos.

  • After nationalisation in 1948, the locos were renumbered by British Railways as 461xx, and designated as class 7P.

  • Polmadie (66A) based locos after nationalisation were:

6102 46102 BLACK WATCH 10/1949 12/1962
6104 46104 SCOTTISH BORDERER 03/1946 12/1962

  • 46102 & 46104 were reallocated to Corkerhill (67A) in October 1962.
  • 46107 & 46121 were stored at Polmadie in October 1962 before final withdrawal in December 1962.
  • 46105/07/21 were stored at Parkhead Shed from May 1963 to May 1964.
  • The five ex-Polmadie locos were scrapped at McWilliams of Shettleston in Summer 1964.

  • Locos from Crewe North (5A) regularly worked into Scotland.
  • In the 1950s, 'Royal Scot' class locos based at Leeds Holbeck (20A/55A) regularly worked into Glasgow St. Enoch on trains such as the Thames-Clyde Express.

  • From June 1963 a number of the class were allocated to Carlisle Kingmoor (12A), frequently working into Scotland.
  • Five locos (46115/42128/46140/46152/46160) remained in service at 12A into 1965, with the last of the class 46115 withdrawn on 01/01/66.
