NBR Class C 0-6-0

Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.
The North British Railway's Locomotive Superintendent, Mathew Holmes, had 168 engines of this type built between 1888 and 1900, for hauling goods trains.

After grouping in 1923, LNER designated them as Class J36. At nationalisation in 1948 British Railways inherited 123 of these locos designating them Class 2F.

  • During the First World War, 25 of the class were sent to France for service with the Railway Operating Division. On return to Scotland, they were given names of battles, generals and a cartoon soldier in recognition of their service. The names were hand-painted on the splasher above the middle driving wheel so often disappeared during repaints.

  • As NBR 673 it ran on the mainline hauling railtours between 1980 - 1986.
  • Since 1988 Maude has been based on the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway.
