The End of BR Steam in Scotland

Welcome to scot-rail.co.uk, Scotland's online railway community. The group is for any rail enthusiast interested in the railways and trains of Scotland. It not only consists of the wiki that you're reading now, but a busy online forum and mailing list, which was accessible to registered users. From April 2024 the forum has closed, with a replacement started on Groups.io.
British Railways Scottish Region withdrew its last steam locomotives from service on 1st May 1967. Steam locomotives based at Carlisle Kingmoor (12A) continued to work into Scotland until the end of 1967, with that shed closing on 01/01/68.

  • Thornton Junction (62A), Dunfermline Upper (62C) closed to steam.

  • On Friday 28th April 1967 the last regular steam workings from Glasgow Central were the 06.55 to Hillington West with 44699 and the 07.19 to Renfrew which had 80004. The Gourock locomotive hauled workings all had diesels on this day except the 17.03 from Gourock which had, most appropriately, Fairburn 2-6-4T 42274. This engine had latterly been at Beattock but appeared at Polmadie towards the end of April and was employed on Central pilot as well as odd Gourock workings. (R.O. 0460 June 1967 )

  • Dundee (62B), Perth (63A), Polmadie (66A), Motherwell (66B), Beattock (66F) and Corkerhill (67A) were all officially closed to steam from 1st May 1967.
  • Steam Working by Scottish Region engines ceased from Monday 1st May 1967, and all were withdrawn with the remarkable exceptions of the two oldest, J36's 65288 and 65345, which remained in store pending possible use for film production in England. These two were later withdrawn on 5th June.
  • B1 61180 remained at Craigentinny for carriage heating and Cl.4 2-6-4T 80002 appeared at Cowlairs for the same purpose.
  • Carlisle engines remained fairly common visitors to Scotland and, contrary to expectations, Perth continued to provide steam servicing, thus enabling the 17.25 Carlisle - Perth parcels and 20.32 Carlisle - Perth passenger to remained steam-hauled during May.
  • Other steam workings included the 12.10 TThO Whitehaven - Gartsherrie freight which is normally double-headed by two Cl.5's or by a Cl.5 and a Cl.9F. (R.O. 0461 July 1967 )

  • The last passenger train in Scotland to be regularly steam-hauled, the 20.32 Carlisle - Perth went over to Type 2 haulage from Wednesday 7th June. On 2nd June 1967, Britania 70025 worked the train.
  • Since then appearances of steam on passenger trains has been rare indeed, the only case being, it is believed, the 13.27 Liverpool to Glasgow which had 70035 on 30th June, returning light (to Kingmoor).
  • A few Carlisle steam freight turns, such as the Wallerscote - Larbert soda ash train, have continued to run. (RO 0462)
  • D1542 on the 21.15 St Pancras - Edinburgh was assisted by 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' from Carlisle to Edinburgh over the Waverley route on the morning of 5th June. 70013 returned light to Carlisle straight away.
  • Cl.5 44997, looking quite smart, was to be seen in solitary splendour in steam at St. Margaret's shed on 29th June resting from carriage heating duties at Craigentinny. (R.O. 0462 Aug 1967).

  • During July 1967, the 06.40 (SO) Birmingham - Glasgow was the only regular steam working into Scotland after changing engines at Carlisle, to 70028 on 15th July, 70021 on 22nd and 44878 on 29th.
  • However, several reliefs have been noted with steam north of the border.
  • On Tuesday 25th 70010 Owen Glendower hauled 1Z12 Birmingham - Glasgow and the following Friday (28th) 1Z13 Euston Glasgow was hauled by 70012. On 29th, 70049 took over a Blackpool - Glasgow relief 1Z94, and 70038 'Robin Hood' worked right through with 13.27 Manchester - Glasgow 1S71. (RO 0463 Sept 1967, p14)

  • A few steam visitors were noted in Scotland during November 1967 although the only passenger workings were those of 70011 and 60019 (the latter on an excursion from Leeds on 04/11/67).
  • Waverley route - the main event during November was the appearance of 70011 Hotspur (12A) on the first portion of the 16.57 Carlisle - Edinburgh. The reason for the train being in two portions was the very late running of the 09.50 St Pancras - Glasgow Central which conveys two through coaches to Edinburgh. 70011 preformed reasonable well to Edinburgh whence it immediately set out light for Carlisle, but was in trouble descending Whitrope failing completely at Newcastleton and was conveyed from there to Carlisle on the front of the 21.30 Millerhill - Oldham freight. (RO 0467, p23).

  • With the closure of Kingmoor steam shed at the end of 1967, the possibilities of further steam workings into Scotland appear to be very remote.
  • One or two steam workings did occur in December, the most surprising being the appearance of 44767 at Ayr on the 2nd. On 7th December, Britannia 70022 'Tornado' was at Polmadie at 17.30
  • On both 21st and 22nd an afternoon freight (6S61) from Carlisle was steam-hauled by 70045 and Cl.5 44844 respectively. (R.O. 0468 Feb 1968)

  • "Two more steam-hauled passenger trains worked into Scotland during December 1967; on December 7th following a derailment at Plumpton and the late running of Anglo-Scottish expresses a special connection from Carlisle to Kilmarnock at 14.28 was powered by Britannia Pacific No. 70022."
  • "On December 14th a special parcels train from Southport to Glasgow was worked by No 70024 from Carlisle to Glasgow Sighthill." (Railway World, Feb 1968).
  • "On December 30th, the 03.08 Carlisle - Ayr Parcels train was worked as far as Kilmarnock by Britannia Pacific 70004. Normally the locomotive off this train takes the 07.32 parcels from Kilmarnock to Glasgow but the driver refused to take a steam locomotive; the 07.32 train was cancelled and 70004 returned light to Carlisle." (Railway World, Mar 1968).
  • The February edition of 'Railway World' reported No. 70045 working forward from Carlisle to Glasgow with a Hogmanay special originating from Manchester, however it is known the loco mentioned was at Rose Grove shed at that time, so the report is questionable.

  • Note: Privately owned Class A4 locos 4498 and 60019 operated several railtours into Scotland during 1967.

  • 'Steam Railway' magazine, December 2017, had a feature on Scottish Steam's Finale - The last Brits north of the border.
